Mother’s Day as we know it in the United States was founded by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia. After her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, passed away in 1905, Anna campaigned tirelessly to create a national holiday honoring mothers. She held the first official Mother’s Day celebration on May 10, 1908, at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, and distributed white carnations — her mother’s favorite flower — to every mother in attendance.
Anna Jarvis’s campaign gained momentum rapidly. By 1911, Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, making it an official national holiday. Ironically, Jarvis later grew deeply resentful of the holiday’s commercialization, spending much of her later life and personal fortune fighting the greeting card, candy, and floral industries she felt had corrupted her creation.
While the U.S. celebrates on the second Sunday in May, countries around the world honor mothers on different dates. The United Kingdom observes Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Mexico celebrates on May 10 regardless of the day of the week. Ethiopia has a multi-day celebration called Antrosht tied to the end of the rainy season. In Thailand, Mother’s Day falls on August 12, the birthday of the late Queen Sirikit. Despite the different dates, the sentiment is universal — a day to express love, gratitude, and appreciation for mothers and mother figures.
Why is Mother’s Day on a different date each year? In the United States and many other countries, Mother’s Day is set as the second Sunday in May rather than a fixed calendar date. This means it can fall anywhere from May 8 to May 14 depending on the year.
What are the most popular ways to celebrate? The most common traditions include giving greeting cards (Mother’s Day is the third-largest card-sending holiday in the U.S.), flowers (especially carnations and roses), and taking mothers out for brunch or dinner. Many families also give gifts, make homemade crafts, or simply spend quality time together.
