Koningsdag, or King’s Day, is the national holiday of the Netherlands, celebrated annually on April 27 — the birthday of King Willem-Alexander, who ascended to the throne in 2013. The tradition of celebrating the monarch’s birthday dates back to 1885, when Princess Wilhelmina’s birthday on August 31 was first marked with festivities. When Queen Juliana succeeded Wilhelmina, the date moved to April 30 (Juliana’s birthday). Queen Beatrix kept her mother’s date when she became queen in 1980. When Willem-Alexander became king, the holiday shifted to April 27.
King’s Day is arguably the Netherlands’ biggest party — an entire nation turns orange for the day, referencing the royal House of Orange-Nassau. An estimated one million people converge on Amsterdam alone, with virtually every public space transformed into a stage for music, dancing, and celebration. The festival is unique among national holidays for its joyful, irreverent, and thoroughly democratic character.
The most distinctive tradition is the “vrijmarkt” (free market), a massive nationwide flea market where anyone can sell secondhand goods, homemade crafts, food, and drinks on the street without a permit — the only day of the year this is allowed. Children set up blankets on sidewalks to sell old toys and perform songs for coins. Canal boats packed with orange-clad revelers cruise through Amsterdam’s waterways blasting music. Outdoor stages host live concerts ranging from electronic DJs to traditional Dutch brass bands. Traditional games include “koekhappen” (biting hanging cake without hands) and “zaklopen” (sack races). The King himself visits a different city or town each year with the royal family, participating in local festivities and community activities.
Why does everyone wear orange? Orange is the national color of the Netherlands, derived from the House of Orange-Nassau, the Dutch royal family. William of Orange (Willem van Oranje) led the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule in the 16th century and is considered the father of the nation. On King’s Day, virtually everything turns orange — clothing, wigs, face paint, food, decorations, and even canal water dyed for the occasion.
What happens if April 27 falls on a Sunday? If King’s Day falls on a Sunday, the celebrations are moved to the preceding Saturday, April 26. This rule was inherited from the Queen’s Day tradition, when the holiday was also shifted to avoid conflict with the Christian day of rest. The last time this happened was in 2014, and it will next occur in 2025.
